AT THE HELM

Rachel Wasserman
Founder/Principal
Rachel Wasserman is a seasoned corporate lawyer with a rare combination of business fluency, legal expertise, and principled conviction.
She began her career in sales and marketing at two of the world’s leading consumer goods companies, gaining firsthand insight into how major businesses operate and grow. She then practiced law at two of Canada’s most prestigious corporate law firms, where she earned a reputation as a business-minded, practical, and principled dealmaker—valued as much for her judgment as her negotiation skills.
She was later recruited to join Canada’s most active corporate finance group as a Senior Vice-President, advising business owners on the sale of their companies to both strategic and financial buyers.
After a decade on Bay Street, Rachel came to a hard truth: much of her work was helping concentrate wealth and power rather than build a stronger economy. She left to help fix what’s broken. As a Fellow at the Canadian Anti-Monopoly Project and Social Capital Partners, she now contributes research and advocacy aimed at building a more democratic and productive economy. Her work focuses on the impact of financialization, capital consolidation, and the barriers entrepreneurs face in today’s market.
Rachel returned to law to do things differently. She launched Wasserman Business Law after seeing that traditional law firms were losing sight of what clients actually wanted. She knew she could build something better—more practical, more principled, and more aligned with the realities of running a business. She is not afraid to take on entrenched systems of power in her advocacy, and that same clarity, strategy, and conviction underpin her legal work. Her practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, governance, and commercial transactions.
She is the author of The Private Equity Playbook: How buyout firms extract rather than build value and what to do about it, a bold call for a less extractive, more growth-oriented economic model. Her commentary has been featured on CBC’s The Fifth Estate, Bloomberg, the Globe and Mail, Canadian Press, the Halifax Examiner, and more.
Rachel holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Co-op) from the Lazaridis School of Business & Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University and a Juris Doctor from Queen’s University.
She lives in Toronto, where she volunteers at the Fort York Food Bank, plays with her dog Millie, and unwinds with a good mockumentary.
